The story of the daughter of Jairus is read late in the church year, as Advent nears, both East and West. In the Greek rite, it is read from the account of Luke (LK 8:40-56) on the 23rd Sunday After Pentecost and read from the account of Matthew (MT 9:18-26) also on the 23rd Sunday After Pentecost in the Latin rite, and, following the custom in Lutheran churches to number the Sundays from Easter Time until Advent after Trinity Sunday, the one after Pentecost, the 24th Sunday after Trinity, which will be 14 November in 2010.
Unless of course you've caved to the revisionist Vatican II lectionary or its wannabes.
You know what, I've chanted since us schoolkids were the choir for Requiem Masses through a Benedictine schola cantorum, but I gotta tell you, this is chanting right up there with the best of it, oh yeah, incipits, melismas, reciting tones, call and response, the works and I feel right at home. So enjoy some Gospel preaching, sin chasing, Holy Ghosting chanting! There's a promise coming down that dusty road, now somebody say Amen!
